Little John Improv brings the best improv shows to Nottingham. From our own homegrown talent to some of the highest regarded improvisers from the UK and around the world, we provide a stage for fantastic shows. We also help develop local talent with workshops and courses. We exist to keep the aims of the Robin Hood International Improv Festival alive all year round, by creating the best in improvised theatre and comedy. Check out a show or come take a workshop.

Little John Improv also offers more courses and workshops in Nottingham than anyone else and has fast become the destination for those wanting to learn improv. We have world-class improvisers part of its teaching faculty including those who run the improv programme at over at Nottingham Playhouse.     April 11th & 12th: Musical Improv 101 Intensive course

    Have the most fun learning how to make songs up in the moment and create improvised scenes that turn into show stopping numbers.This course from Little John Improv (in association with Rhymes Against Humanity) will get to make your own kind of music - and sing your own songs.

    This course is designed to give you the skills to make up different styles of improvised songs with others and to deliver them with confidence.

    Musical Improv 101 is a joyful, supportive introduction to creating songs in the moment .

    After working with Naomi, you will be able to improvise musical numbers with ease.

    Apr 20TH - June 15th: Musical Improv 201 Course

    Mondays, April 20 – June 15 (no class May 4) 6:30–8:30pm

    Take the next step in your musical improv journey and start building the skills needed to create an improvised musical. This course focuses on transforming scenes into songs and developing longer narrative arcs.

    You’ll learn how to heighten emotional moments, recognise when a song should begin, and support ensemble storytelling through music.

    You’ll work on seamless transitions from dialogue into song, identifying the emotional “why” of a musical moment and foundations of improvised musical formats.

    Ideal for students who have completed Musical Improv 101 or have equivalent experience.

    Apr 22nd - July 1st. Making It Up - Advanced Skills Improv

    This course is run by Nottingham Playhouse and taught by Little John Improv’s Lloydie James Lloyd.

    Ready to level-up your improv?

    When you’ve got a solid grounding in the core skills of improv, this level will help you finesse your skills, work on more advanced concepts and work on making you a more adaptable improviser.

    Each term the advanced students learn new skills and work on a different improv format ready for their end of term showcase at Nottingham Playhouse.

    Prerequisites: “Making It Up: Core Skills” for at least one term. If you have significant improv experience elsewhere you may also apply.

    Apr 24th - July 3rd. Making It Up - Core Skills Improv Course

    This course is run by Nottingham Playhouse and taught by Little John Improv’s Naomi Murden.

    Using improvisational techniques, you will learn how discovery ‘in the moment’ leads to fascinating characters, interesting scenes and moments of comedy that you would never have been able to plan.

    Over a period of ten weeks, you will learn the art of collaborative scene work and become a team of players that support each other on stage and off while each discovering your unique comedic voice.

    At the end of term, you get to perform a showcase for an audience.

    Acting or improv experience is useful but not essential.

    Mon 4th: 2 is the Magic Number - a workshop with Andel Sudik

    Mon 4th: Workshop runs from 1pm - 4pm

    If you want to tune-up your two person scene work or if you have a duo/two-prov you are working on, this could be just what you are looking for. This workshop focuses on scenic and play dynamics through pairs.

    Using acting exercises we’ll explore what improvisation can be when we drop our guards and allow ourselves to live on stage, see and be seen.

    We’ll spend the first hour working out with some improv drills and different ways to connect and the second two playing with the duo dynamics we can create in the room.
